PROJECT 2
The Smith House.
The purpose and intention of my project is not just about focusing on adding space, but designing an addition to respect existing architecture, while also redefining how it serves the family. These new additions expand the original home- all the while introducing new spaces that fit with the family’s most important values and needs. The practice of demolishing and constructing new buildings is a process I am not at all supportive of. I believe the original charm and design should be respected– but at the same time, it can be adaptable to serve changing needs while preserving the architecture’s legacy.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN

CONCEPTUAL META-IDEA

PLAYING AROUND WITH DIFFERENT SHAPES, I KNEW I WANTED TO INCORPORATE A ROTATED SHAPE: WITH THE INTENTION TO AVOID NON-ORTHOGONAL FORMS IN THE DESIGN.
The focus of this transformation is a newly envisioned outdoor space-one which becomes the hierarchal focus of this addition. Rather than being an extension of the indoor space, this space stands on its own as a purposeful retreat. Inspired from modern interpretations of sunrooms, This area will offer unrestricted access to the striking scenery of jagged rocks and trees cutting along the view of the coast– enhancing one's connection to nature. This space anchors the home- embodying a renewed value on calm, open-air living.
